The Lady Of The Hall

“There are many depictions of woman such as this on stones and amulets from the Viking age, but if any of them where originally painted, their colouring is now lost to us. Something that’s usually not highlighted in today’s depictions of the Viking age was it’s vibrancy and extreme use of colour. To our modern fashions it would probably come across as garish to us now. But back then colour meant wealth.
I’ve painted this as one of the first of a long series of images of pictorial characters from history in colour. It’s both to delve into the portrayal of characters and to test my artistic ability when it comes to fine details.”
Written by Sean Parry.
The original painting is acrylic on canvas. The image may also be used at some point in a limited set of prints.
