Jelling Serpent

”Inspired by the Jelling (early Viking art) creatures on the thistle broaches found in Scotland and now on display in the Nation museum in Edinburgh, this painting was a part of a study I made a few years ago on the style. Over the years I’ve revisit the historical styles to remind myself of the origins of the arts I work with, and every time I do I find something new and interesting to focus on. The colours I used in this piece are based pigments we know for sure was actually used in the Viking age.”
