Insular Celtic Dog | Organic Tank Top

Design

Insular art is a term that is used in casual discussion about ancient art styles as well as deep academic use. It's loosely defined as a way to view the art from the British Isles that has been blended (native Celtic art, Saxon art, and Viking art) but then highly concentrated within a specific space to create a unique style.

Within the Northern European world, it often refers to the art crafted in the Medieval world, usually created by monks within highly valuable manuscripts.

Key features of this style are knotwork, winding animals, and tangled individuals wound about vegetal tendrils.

The most famous examples of this style can be found in The Book of Kells and The Lindesfarne Gospels.

This design from Sacred Knot Tattoo is hand printed in the Northern Fire studio by Sean himself. It features a beastly (or perhaps adorable, depending on how you look at it) dog similar to ones found in The Book of Kells.

Material & Make

Our Tank Top's are made with ethically sourced 100% organic cotton and are hand printed in house by Northern Fire artists at our workshop in Wales. Our inks are water based and locally sourced and to minimise the negative impact of the textile industry on the environment.

About The Artist

Sean Parry is the owner and lead artist of Sacred Knot Tattoo, as well as a founding member of the Northern Fire Art Collective. He specialises in Celtic and Nordic arts and lives and works from his hometown of Llandudno in North Wales. Sean’s projects incorporate knotwork, swirls, and beasts inspired and mirroring those found in the historical record - a reflection of his passion for archaeology and ancient iconography. Though he is well known for his mastery as a tattooist, his work with paint, leather, and precious metals are also part of his artistic endeavours.
