I spent around a Month painting this just before I made the switch to becoming a full time tattoo artist during the global recession. It’s based on the Welsh Arthurian myths of Wales before the French Romanticism entered the tales. The real Arthur lived in the 6th or 8th century. I chose to place him in the 6th, hence the strong Romano Celt aesthetic to the defending warriors facing the hoard of Germanic warriors. Since I painted this around ten years ago, I realised how much of the image is placed in fantasy archaeologically. But I guess that’s usually the case with Arthurian stories and depictions, so on reflection I think it’s quite fitting.
this painting has been hanging in my studio for many years now and never fails to fascinate my customers. But, as close as this painting is to me, I came to the conclusion that if it ever sold it would give me the chance and time to paint another one of these epic battles scenes. This is a large painting and would need a big wall to place it on, but until it sells one day it will be at home in my studio.”
