Hiberno Norse Hair Pin

  • £35.00
Design

This Hiberno-Norse hair pin has been cast in pewter by Sacred Knot Tattoo.

The blending of the Vikings with the Gaels produced conflict, but also a maelstrom of unique artwork. Early medieval iconography from the isles tell stories about these cultural collisions and collaborations. The dragon heads crafted by ancient Irish and Nordic peoples are no exception.

The design for this dragon head pin offers a glimpse into a time when worlds exchanged ideas, even in their depictions of mythological creatures. The beast on this pin is a nod to this time period - one of turmoil but also of art and magic.

In the last image, you can see some examples of this concept by the peoples of the time - the Vikings occupying Ireland. These pins are housed in the National Museum of Ireland and we had the privilege of seeing them in person for inspiration.
